Eat Local. Eat Fresh. Eat Easy.

Join our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and get a weekly box of fresh, locally-grown vegetables from June through October. No grocery store trips, no guessing what's in season — just the best produce Montana has to offer.

What is a CSA?

Never heard of CSA? You're not alone!

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Here's how it works:

You buy a "share" of our farm's harvest at the beginning of the season. Then, every week from June through October, you pick up a box filled with whatever's ripe and ready that week.

Think of it like a weekly vegetable subscription box — except it comes straight from our greenhouse and garden, not a warehouse hundreds of miles away.

When you join our CSA, you're not just buying vegetables. You're supporting a local farm, eating the freshest possible produce, and becoming part of our farming community.

What’s in a Share?

Every box is valued at $35-45 retail. You pay just $27.50/week! Eat Local. Eat Fresh. Eat Easy.

Every week is different, but here's what you can expect:

🌱 Early Summer (June)

  • Our signature Swanky Mix lettuce

  • Fresh asparagus

  • Sweet peppers

  • Cherry tomatoes

  • Carrots, beets, kale

  • Spring onions

8-10 different items per week

☀️ Peak Summer (July-August)

  • Heirloom tomatoes (German Johnson, Cherokee Purple — these are incredible!)

  • Sweet peppers (Carmen, Escamillo, and more)

  • Jalapeños and hot peppers

  • Cucumbers

  • Summer squash

  • Eggplant

  • Fresh herbs

  • And yes, lots more Swanky Mix!

9-12 different items per week

🍂 Fall (September-October)

  • Winter squash (butternut, delicata, acorn, buttercup)

  • Pie pumpkins

  • Carrots and beets (sweetened by frost!)

  • Storage onions

  • Kale and Swiss chard

  • The last of the season's tomatoes

8-10 different items per week

Why Join Our CSA? 5 Reasons

Eat the Freshest Vegetables You've Ever Tasted

1

Our tomatoes are picked yesterday, not last week. Our lettuce was growing in the greenhouse 24 hours ago. You simply can't buy produce this fresh at a grocery store.

Fun fact: Most grocery store produce travels 1,500+ miles before reaching your plate. Ours travels less than 15.

Save Money on Premium Vegetables

2

Our CSA share costs $27.50 per week. If you bought the same vegetables at a farmers market or grocery store, you'd pay $35-50.

You save $10-20 every single week.

Over the 20-week season, that's $200-400 in savings — plus you're getting heirloom tomatoes, organic methods, and the best vegetables we grow.

Get Varieties You Can't Find in Stores

3

When's the last time you saw a German Johnson tomato at the grocery store? Or Delicata squash? Or Carmen sweet peppers?

We grow 20+ different crops and dozens of unique varieties — many of them heirloom or specialty varieties chosen for flavor, not shelf life.

Your CSA box is like a weekly farmers market delivered to you.

Support Your Local Farm & Local Food System

4

When you join our CSA, your money goes directly to our farm. No middlemen, no distributors, no grocery store markups.

You help us:

  • Plan our season with confidence

  • Invest in better seeds, soil, and equipment

  • Keep farming in Billings

  • Grow food the right way (no pesticides, no shortcuts)

And we help you eat healthier, save money, and reconnect with where your food comes from.

5

Zero Meal Planning Stress

Every week you get a box of fresh vegetables and a newsletter with recipe ideas. We take the guesswork out of "what should I cook this week?"

Plus, eating seasonally means you're always cooking with what tastes best right now.

Hi! We're Swanky Roots.

In addition to our lettuce greenhouse - we grow seasonal vegetables in Billings using three structures: an NRCS-funded greenhouse, a hoop house, and 36 outdoor garden beds. That's over 20 different crops and dozens of unique varieties — all grown without pesticides, with lots of care, and a genuine love for what we do.

Why are we starting a CSA?

Because we want to connect directly with the people who eat our food. We want you to taste a tomato that was picked yesterday. We want you to know where your food comes from and who grew it.

Our CSA is simple: We grow it, you eat it. Fresh, local, and full of flavor.

We can't wait to grow for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our CSA is "Farm's Choice" — meaning you get what's ripe that week with no substitutions. But here's the thing: our boxes have 8-12 different items, so even if there's one thing you don't love, there are plenty of other vegetables to enjoy.

Plus, we include recipe ideas every week to help you try new ways of cooking!

  • You can designate an alternate pickup person (a friend, neighbor, family member) to grab your box. Or, you can donate your box to someone in need — just let us know and we'll make sure it goes to a good home.

Unfortunately, we can't offer credits or makeups for missed weeks. The vegetables are picked fresh for you, so they can't be saved.

  • All CSA boxes are stored in our cooler until pickup. Plus, you'll get a reusable insulated bag that keeps everything fresh on your drive home!

  • You choose one day at signup (Friday or Saturday), but if you need to switch occasionally, just let us know at least 24 hours in advance!

  • Nope! We use organic growing methods and zero synthetic pesticides. Our vegetables are grown in living soil with compost, crop rotation, and natural pest management.

  • That's the beauty (and reality) of CSA — you share in both the abundance and the risks of farming. If a crop fails, we'll replace it with something else from the garden. Some weeks might have less variety, but we always make sure your box is full!

This is why it's called "Community Supported Agriculture" — you're supporting us through the ups and downs of the growing season.

  • Boxes typically weigh 12-18 pounds depending on what's in season. Peak summer boxes (with lots of tomatoes and squash) are heavier. Spring boxes (with lots of greens) are lighter.

  • For our first year, we're requiring full payment upfront by May 15th. This helps us plan our season and invest in the seeds and supplies we need!
